Prevent Hoptown Flooding!
Saving Lives, Saving Homes, Saving Businesses
Flood History
More than 1,100 properties in Hopkinsville have a significant chance of being severely affected by flooding, according to FEMA. Our city has a moderate-to-high risk of flooding over the next 30 years, impacting all of us in our community. In the past 100 years, there have been 18 major flood events. In 1997 alone, Hopkinsville suffered $75 million flood damages, 450 flood-damaged homes and 150 flood-damaged businesses.
Supporting Our Community
Since 2005, the Hopkinsville Surface and Stormwater Utility has been working to reduce the threat of flooding. To date, the HSSU has initiated 27 major flood control projects and dozens of water drainage initiatives on behalf of Hopkinsville to help mitigate the city’s flooding. During the rain and winter storms of 2020, the flood control systems established by the HSSU helped save an estimated 300 homes and countless number of businesses from flood damage and drainage issues.
South Fork Little River Flood Control Project
The South Fork Little River Flood Control Project is a vital component of the overall HSSU flood prevention plan, working in conjunction with the South Fork High Flow Culvert and Hopkinsville flood control systems. The South Fork flood control structure is a labyrinth weir structure that will control more water using a smaller footprint. The structure is within city limits and will have no upstream flood impact.
